Dining Room Design Photo #1: White wainscoting

White wainscoting will make your formal dining room look larger and more formal, by drawing the eye upwards from the floor. In this photo, a triple transom window and crystal hanging light fixture with hints of bronze create a traditional, upscale look. An archway welcomes you and your guests.

Bronze fixtures are making their way into 2014 new home styles - see more photos here:

Dining Room Design Photo #2: Painted wainscoting

In this Raleigh new home, painted wainscoting covers the dining room from floor-to-ceiling. The medium grey paint pulls out the darker tones in the stone of the see through fireplace.

Craftsman style extra wide baseboards and a crystal chandelier emanate old-world Tuscan style. If you love shopping at Pottery Barn, Restoration Hardware, or Crate and Barrel, you've probably seen similar wall paneling in their dining room designs.

Dining Room Design Photo #3: Archways

Archways bring eye-pleasing style to your formal dining room. In this Raleigh new home photo, the cool dining room features details like chair rail trim, a trey ceiling, and three archway entrances.

A powder room is conviently tucked into the arched hallway that connects the kitchen and formal dining room.

Dining Room Design Photo #4: Custom trey ceilings

Formal dining rooms can occasionally come off as too traditional, stiff, or cold.

But don't be afraid to use a classic cream, taupe, or tan color scheme in the formal dining.

A bold touch - such as an angled octagonal trey ceiling - will punctuate the room with modern design appeal, especially when paired with contrasting craftsman staircase details.

Dining Room Design Photo #5: White columns

In 2014 new homes, we will continue to see white columns, inside and out. In this dining room photo, a white Roman columns encase the dining room, setting it apart from the great room and curved staircase foyer. See another dining room with white columns in The Summerlyn

Dining Room Design Photo #6: Coffered ceiling

Red dining rooms are classic and elegant. In this photo, red walls, dark hardwoods floors, white wainscoting, a white column, and a crisp white coffered ceiling create a formal, sophisticated style.

Arched windows with custom trim work round out the upscale tone.

Great post.  I love the wainscoting and see that often in higher end homes in NY.  I rarely see painted wainscoting.  It generally looks more lower end.  Many here are doing darker floors and white wainscoting creates a great contrast.
