William B Umstead State Park is a huge, 5,579-acre park located in the middle of the Triangle, between Raleigh, Cary, and Durham. It is bordered by Highway 70, Interstate 40, and the RDU International Airport.
Development of Umstead Park was started in 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, an organization founded as part of President Roosevelt's New Deal plan. The park was first opened to the public in 1937.

Umstead Park Gate Hours:
November - February, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.
March, April, September, October, 8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
May - August, 8 a.m. - 9 p.m.

8 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily

Visitor Center Hours:
March – October, 9 a.m. until 6 p.m.
November - February, 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.

Note: The gate at the Crabtree Creek entrance will open at 7 a.m. daily as part of a pilot program to allow early access to the trails system.

Umstead Park is mostly forested, with the majority of trees being pines. The park is hilly, and contains several lakes, used for boating and fishing.
There are several picnic and recreation areas on the shores where visitors can play sports, have a meal, or simply relax.

There are extensive trails througout Umstead park for Cycling, Hiking, and Horses. Umstead Park has something for everyone wanting to enjoy nature.

William B Umstead Park is truly one of the great attractions of living in Raleigh, or any nearby town.
